"Hardcore Hippie"

Well, today I'm taking cloth diapering to the next level. Today, we begin using cloth wipes!

I was too overwhelmed with everything to try them when I started using CD's but now that we have that all established I figured it's time to move on to the next step. I don't anticipate it being a big deal. Pretty much the only difference is that now I'll toss my wipes in the wet bag with the diaper instead of throwing them away in the trash. Hey, it may even make things simpler. When I was purchasing the wipes today at Mama's Hip another CDing momma heard me saying "We'll see how I like it..." and she said, "Oh, you will love it!". I'm sure I will, and it's always nice to have a little encouragement for my like-minded mommas :)

Quick update about my "supply" drama from my last post: Things seem to be getting back to normal. I'm chalking that fiasco up to crazy schedule throwing everything off. Anyway, crisis diverted... for now. Thanks for all of my sweet friends that offered encouragement and support while I was having my freak out! I'm sure I'll be needing it again someday....

That's all for now... I'm off to chase around my busy girl! :)

Not ready...

WARNING: This blog is about breastfeeding so if you don't want to see any details about my milk production I suggest you skip this blog.

Just a few weeks ago a friend was asking me how much longer I'm planning to breastfeed my baby girl and I confidently answered, "My goal is at least a year but if something happens sooner I'm not going to fight it - we've had a great run.". Well, turns out, I changed my mind.

Unexpectedly today I'm producing about 1/3 of the milk I typically do. There is no obvious reason for this drastic change and I'm kind of freaking out. Auria's diet is still about 75% mommas milk... what will I do if tomorrow I'm not producing anything?! I'm not ready for this! All I want to do is cry :(

It's true that our 8.5 month's of this has been a great run but now that it could very well be coming to a screeching halt, I'm realizing that it's just not enough. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself and there isn't anything to worry about. Maybe it's just because our schedules have been so far from the norm the past several days and my body is just trying to figure out what's going on. I really hope that's the case.

I'm having flashbacks to Auria's first several weeks when we struggled with low production and my feelings of inadequacy... I know there could be far worse things than this but I'm just really not prepared for this to happen now/so quickly.

6 Weeks Old!

I can't believe it, my little baby girl is six weeks old today! It's so amazing how much she has grown already.. she's pretty much out of newborn sizes now and I noticed today that her 0-3 month clothes with feet may not fit her for very long because her giant feet are already almost out of room!
Here are a few pictures I took this morning:

Josh was actually off today so the 3 of us got to spend the whole day together. We didn't go to church this morning because I wasn't sure what the roads would be like. My car is kind of a piece of poo so I didn't want to risk mixing that with poor road conditions. Since Josh was home I took advantage of the extra pair of hands and I got some things done that I didn't get to through the week... I finally finished wrapping all of the Christmas gifts we've purchased so far, I got the Christmas cards addressed and stamped, bills are ready to be mailed, did some laundry, and, of course, continued in my milk producing regiment. We went out for dinner and we met up with one of our good friends that we haven't seen in way too long. Afterwards we made a quick stop at Kroger to pick up some basics.

All in all in was a pretty productive day and I think I needed that. Sometimes I get so frustrated when I feel like I'm not getting things accomplished. I understand that things are on Auria's terms now but still, I have a hard time cutting myself some slack sometimes.

I'm really hoping Auria sleeps well tonight so maybe we can have another productive day tomorrow! My main goal is for both of us to get a bath/shower since that didn't happen for either one of us like I'd hoped for today. I suppose I could still make either or both of those happen today as it is only 8:30 but I'm having a hard time keeping her awake so I think instead I'm going to join her in sleep!

Nighty night!

Ducts - for tears and milk!

Sometimes Auria won't nap unless mommy holds her and today has been one of those days. Now, understand, this not a complaint whatsoever, I love holding and snuggling with my baby girl and I'm happy to do it all day long.... it just doesn't make for the most productive of days. *Ususally I'd put her in the Moby in this situation but it's in Daddy's car and he had to work today :/

So, on these kinds of days when I can't get much done, I tend to browse the internet quite a bit. Today I was going back and reading some of my older blogs from when I was pregnant and I came across this one.
"...I wasn't asleep for very long before my alarm went off but it was just long enough for a short little dream. In this sweet little dream I saw her! I saw myself in the hospital, just a few hours after delivery, holding my beautiful, perfect, baby girl on my chest! :) :) :) She wasn't tiny, but she wasn't huge either - she was just right! She didn't have a ton of hair but she did have a nice, dark covering on her cute noggin. She was just snuggled up on my chest with her little fist tucked under her chin... it was absolutely precious! I didn't see details of her features but I remember thinking that she was the perfect combination of Josh and me..."

When I read this I couldn't help but tear up because I realized it was her! Everything about that description is exactly my Auria! I'd hoped at the time that somehow I really was getting a glimpse at my baby girl and to realize now that I did... I dunno, it just makes me emotional. Anyway, for anyone that may have read that blog I just thought I'd share that with you ;)

Okay so milk production update: It's working! I feel fuller each time she's ready to feed now so that's definitely a good sign. Also, I'm noticing more milk mess on her face when she's finished nursing, which to me says she's probably getting more than she's used to. I'm going to experiment with Auria's next feeding and just give her a bottle (of boob juice) so I can just pump and get a better idea of exactly how much more I'm making. I know it's probably only the difference of 15-30ml's (.5-1oz) but I'll take any increase I can get! I'm assuming that as I continue to take this supplement over the course of the month that my supply should continue to increase a little more and hopefully when I've finished this prescription I've established enough to sustain her appetite.

Last thing before I go - I'm hoping, by some miracle, my cd's I ordered online will arrive this afternoon! They're supposed to be here on Monday or Tuesday so I'll actually be a couple of days behind on my planned timeline, oopsie! All I can think about lately is cd's and I can't wait to get started with my experiment! :)

It's December!

I can't believe December is here already! And what a way to kick off the month - it's been snowing & Auria and I are a little sicky. It's so pitiful hearing my baby girls tiny little cough and listening to the yuckies in her little nosey :/ She's still such a good baby though, she's not screaming her head off or anything, just some little whimpers every now and again to tell momma she needs something. is her usual happy, sweet self... and a little extra snuggly today which I don't mind one bit!

We had plans to meet up with some friends from our Bradley class but we cancelled them so we can rest at home & hopefully get to feeling better soon! And resting we are... well, she is anyway! I hate knowing my precious baby isn't feeling 100% so I'm praying this doesn't stick around for very long.

We got our Christmas cards in the mail today so I'm hoping to find time to get them addressed and mailed out before the weekend. We also got the bows, headbands, and flower clips that I ordered for Auria from this website a friend told me about... I got 12 headbands in assorted colors, 6 flower clips, and 2 bows for $16! This place has a huge variety so if you're looking for such products I highly recommend checking this site out! Also, I ordered these on Monday morning and recieved them today - I love fast shippers!

Day 1 of my new milk making plan went according to schedule. Can't tell a difference yet of course but they said I should notice something within about 3 days so we're getting closer and I'm very excited about that! I'm also getting closer to the beginning of our cloth diapering experiement so I'm kind of excited about that too.

Alright, time to get back to my little sicky girl... tootles!

Nursing.

For something so natural, nursing has been a bit challenging for us. It's something I always planned on doing but I certainly never considered all of the potential obstacles I'd come across just to nourish my baby. Who knew that you could have latching issues, you can produce too much milk or not enough, it can be painful, you can get infections and clogged ducts. I've got to admit, I can see now why people don't stick with it... breastfeeding can be a full time job!

Our story in a nutshell is that, in her first couple of weeks, Auria was not gaining her weight back like she was supposed to - in fact, she was losing weight. [Note: This was coinciding with the jaundice ordeal so this was extra emotionally overwhelming for mommy to take in and deal with!] Anyway, of course we had to make sure she was healthy, so to ensure her weight gain we were instucted by her pediatrician to begin supplementing her feedings with formula. I was devastated that I wasn't producing what my baby needed and I really didn't want to give her a bottle yet (especially not one full of anything but momma's milk!) but I had to do what I had to do.
*I will admit that there were moments when I did appreciate having a break from having her on the breast in the 2nd and 3rd weeks because I was very sore at times.... during some feedings I would cringe when she latched.

With the advice of the hospital lactation consultant I began using a breastpump to help stimulate more production. I also drank mother's milk tea, ate oatmeal for breakfast, and I started taking a supplement (more milk plus) made with fenugreek... all in an effort to increase my supply.

Fast forward to now (about 3 weeks later) and I'm producing more, but still not enough to satisfy my baby girl. Luckily she's gaining weight just fine (at her one month check up she was 9lbs 11oz, which puts her in the 75th percentile for growth) so we know we're safe to try to wean her from the formula. Now the problem is just that after I nurse her, she's still hungry.

I had a consultation at Babyology yesterday and they helped me find out how much milk I'm actually transfering to Auria during a feeding. The results were better than I anticipated but still not good enough to say bye-bye to formula just yet. We came up with a plan of action so I'm back to pumping after every feeding, taking the more milk plus, eating oats... and now I'm also going to take another supplement called Donperidon. I had to get it from a compound pharmacy and it was very expensive ($180 for one month's supply). I called my breastmilk "liquid gold" before but now I think it's more like platinum, lol. This stuff is supposed to increase my production by 30% or something like that and they said I should notice a difference in about 3 days so I'm praying that this does the trick!

So, switching subjects, today at mommy group one of the women asked about drinking wine while breastfeeding. I've heard so many different things on that subject so I was interested to hear what the consultant would say. I won't go into all of the details but ultimately she said that within certain guidelines, a glass of wine every once in a while is okay. She also told us about these breastmilk alcohol test strips (milkscreen) that you can buy to test for the presence of alcohol in your milk. In case you're wondering, they sell them at Target - in the section with the breastpumps and things of that nature. Yes, I bought some and it couldn't have been at a better time because with all of this milk drama I'm feeling so stressed (and like a complete failure) so I'm looking forward to having a few sips of wine to help myself relax a little bit.

Alright, off to find my houdini and that bottle of wine that's been hanging around the house all sad and lonely for the past year or so ;) I'll follow up in a few days or so, hopefully with good news about this new milk program!
